City to open pet adoption center in Southwest Fort Worth

Yearly, the City of Fort Worth’s Chuck Silcox Animal Care and Control Center takes in approximately 4,500 adoptable dogs and cats that are unclaimed. Despite the staff efforts, partnerships with 20 to 30 animal rescue groups and extensive promotion of the center’s adoption program, annually only about 2,000 dogs and cats find new homes.

To improve that number, the Code Compliance Department is working with PetSmart, Inc., PetSmart Charities and a private donor group to establish an animal adoption center at the PetSmart store at 4800 Southwest Loop 820.

Under a two-year agreement, the new center will serve as a pilot program that, hopefully, will lead to more such centers in Fort Worth and serve as a model for other.

With this new program, PetSmart will provide space rent-free at the store. That space will be renovated and equipped, free of charge to the City. In return, the City will be responsible for staffing and operating the center, which will accommodate approximately 25 animals.

It is estimated 1,300 additional shelter animals will be adopted annually from the new location. PetSmart has agreed to pay a $15 bonus for each animal adopted, which would mean an additional $20,000 in revenue generated to help sustain the program.

Donations will also be a key to sustaining the program. Thus far, a private donor group has raised more than $72,000. To donate to the program, mail checks made out to the Fort Worth Adoption Center, c/o Code Compliance Department, 818 Missouri Ave., Fort Worth TX, 76104.
