Zoning Issues

Zoning helps city government regulate congestion on streets, prevent overcrowding, maintain property values and ensure the health, safety and general welfare of residents.

Zoning violations — like this illegal fence addition — are considered harmless by some, but they can have determental effects on property value and safety.

Code Compliance routinely investigates violations, which often include: 

• automobile repair shops, wrecking yards and daycares operated in residential zoning
• outside storage
• encroachment of a right of way
• unpermitted garage sales
• fence regulations.

Violators are issued a written notice directing that the violation be corrected within ten days.  Illegal uses of zoned areas can result in a fine of up to $2,000 for each offense.
