SUBJECT:
Ratify the Fire Department's Application for the Assistance to Firefighter Station Construction Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the Amount Not to Exceed $15,000,000.00 for the Construction of Three Fire Stations

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that City Council ratify the Fire Department's application for a three year Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an amount not to exceed $15,000,000.00 for the construction of three fire stations.

DISCUSSION:
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides funding for the construction and modification of fire stations through the Assistance to Firefighters Fire Station Construction Grants (FSC). These grants will enhance firefighters' response capability and help protect the community from fire and fire-related hazards.

In order to meet the grant application deadline, the Fire Department submitted an application for an amount not to exceed $15,000,000.00 for the construction of three fire stations. Many of the normal costs for fire station construction, however, are not eligible for funding under the grant. If awarded, staff will asses the budgetary impact of additional City funds needed to supplement the Grant and recommend the best course of action to City Council.
