The Friends for Fort Worth Firefightersis a nonprofit organization formed in 1986 to provide special recognition to Fire Department personnel in the form of an awards banquet. Kay Day, the founding president, said, “This is one way the community can give something back to the firefighters who risk their lives for us.” Although the banquet location and board members have changed over time, the purpose has remained the same, to honor those who honor us with their service. The annual event has grown to more than 700 attendees, with 10 regular award presentations being made, including Firefighter of the Year, Distinguished Service Award, Medal of Valor, and many others.

Nominations are received from the members of the Fort Worth Fire Department and the community in general. Four fire service related independent judges from outside the city then evaluate them.
