It is hard to know what to say when someone asks you for money. We are often moved by the people we see at highway exits, intersections and on the sidewalk. It is a dilemma, but you can help in a meaningful way without giving cash. We recommend that people not give money to panhandlers.
Carrying bus passes or gift certificates for fast food is a good idea if you feel compelled to respond. Homeless people do not always know where to go or who to call for help. By carrying a copy of the “pocket pal” or a referral card you can give someone a reference that includes telephone numbers and addresses of places where they can receive more comprehensive assistance.
