Citizen Kane (1941, B/W, 119 min., Rated PG)
January 3, 2009 at 2 p.m.
Newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane dies in his massive Florida estate. Through interviews with Kane’s family, friends and associates, we learn the facts of his eventful and tragic life and, in the process, learn the meaning behind Kane’s last word: “Rosebud.” Orson Welles was just 25 years old when he produced, directed, co-wrote and starred in his first (and best) film. Nine Oscar nominations include Best Picture; winner for Best Original Screenplay. One of the first movies to be added to the National Film Registry.

Sounder (1972, Color, 105 min., Panavision, Rated G)
February 7 at 2 p.m.
An African-American sharecropper (Paul Winfield) steals food to feed his starving family and is arrested, leaving his wife and three children to endure poverty and prejudice in the Depression-era South. As he grows into manhood, elder son David (played by Kevin Hooks) is encouraged to dream of escape while both he and faithful dog Sounder wait for father to come home. Four Oscar nominations include Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress (Cicely Tyson). William H. Armstrong’s inspiring novel won the Newbery Award. A sequel and a remake followed.

Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959, Color, 91 min., Rated G)
March 7 at 2 p.m.
An Irish caretaker (Albert Sharpe) spins a lot of stories – so many, in fact, that when he captures the King of the Leprechauns, no one believes him. While Darby engages in an amusing battle of wits with the King, he also schemes to marry off his daughter Katie (Janet Munro). When tragedy befalls the O’Gill clan, Darby must keep the terrifying banshee and Death Coach at bay! Sean Connery co-stars (and sings!) three years before he became the first James Bond. “An utter delight, with dazzling special effects.” – Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide
