Fort Worth Library's Third Thursday Jazz Series

If you are a fan of jazz, then you won’t want to miss the Fort Worth Library’s new Third Thursday Jazz Series.

The series will include six concerts and features some prominent nationally known acts. There’s vocalist Jay Clayton, who has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center; guitarist Dan Faehnle, who has drawn rave reviews and toured with Diana Krall; and saxophonist Mack Goldsbury, who has twice been nominated for a Grammy Award.

The series also includes three of the top performers from the local jazz scene: Paul Unger, Joey Carter and Sumter Bruton. It’s an outstanding lineup of shows, and all of them are free and open to the public.

All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Gallery of the Fort Worth Central Library. For more information, please call 817-871-7705.

Complete Lineup

  • March 18: Paul Unger Sextet performs music from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue.
  • April 22: Dan Faehnle Quartet, highly regarded young guitarist currently touring with Pink Martini. (Please note: April’s concert will be held on the fourth Thursday.)
  • May 20: Jay Clayton sings jazz standards.  A favorite of the New York and European jazz scenes, vocalist Jay Clayton has performed at the Lincoln Center and at the Montmartre Jazz Festival. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a top-quality performer singing and discussing the art of jazz!
  • June 17: Joey Carter Quartet plays the music of Thelonious Monk.  TCU music instructor Joey Carter is an accomplished drummer, percussionist, pianist and jazz vibraphonist who has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony. His quartet will be performing the music of Thelonious Monk, one of the most important figures in the history of jazz. This show is the perfect accompaniment to Robin Kelley’s recently published biography of Monk, which has received critical praise.
  • July 15: Mack Goldsbury Quartet celebrates the sound of the Texas tenor sax.  Saxophonist Mack Goldsbury has received two Grammy Award nominations. He also has performed in sessions with music legends Stevie Wonder, John Scofield, Joe Lovano and Tony Bennett. Joining Mack will be drummer Duane Durrett, founder of the Weatherford College Jazz Studies Program. This show promises to be a swinging romp through jazz classics – don’t miss it!
  • Aug. 19: Bruton & Price Swingmasters Quartet plays the blues side of jazz.  A skilled interpreter of the guitar style of T-Bone Walker, Sumter has played with Robert Ealey and was a co-founder of the Juke Jumpers. He also is a Fort Worth native, brother of the late Stephen Bruton and owner of the Record Town store by TCU. Sumter will be joined by pianist-vocalist Mike Price of Price Swing Masters Revue. Their performance will include several songs from the jump-blues style of the post-WWII period. This promises to be an intriguing and entertaining show – don’t miss it!
