where Fort Worth GROWS "green"

about the tree farm

Forestry has its own 71 acre tree farm. Seeds are collected throughout the city, potted, and then either repotted in 5-gallon containers or planted in fields. The 5-gallon containerized seedlings are used for planting in the City’s parkways (the area located between the sidewalk and the curb) for the Neighborhood Tree Planting Program.  Large container trees & ball & burlap trees are grown here for the Tree Grant Program.

rainwater harvesting
doing our part to help conserve Fort Worth's water resources

In an effort to conserve water in our operations, as well as provide public outreach & education on water conservation issues, Forestry has installed a 10,000 gallon rainwater harvesting system.

The system will be able to collect nearly 200,000 gallons of rain on an average rainfall year (about 32")!  We use this water for various things such as:

  • watering our 1 & 5 gallon container stock in the greenhouse

  • filling up our water truck so that we can water newly-planted trees in our parks throughout the city
