preventing and managing
oak wilt
When in doubt, a
trained Arborist
may be consulted. Oak Wilt may also be confirmed by isolating (sampling
procedure) the fungus from diseased tissue in a laboratory.
Samples can be submitted to the Texas
A & M Plant Diagnostic Clinic.
• When pruning or clearing Red Oaks or Live Oaks cover freshly cut
wounds with a pruning paint. Especially paint wounds if they are
made from February 1 to June 1 since that is the time period insects
are most active and fungal mats are forming. There is no need to
go back and paint wounds that are over 2 days old.
• When pruning known infected trees, sterilize equipment
between trees with a diluted bleach solution or household fungicidal
spray.
• Remove infected Red Oaks as they occur to reduce spore
mat formation.
|
• If firewood is of an unknown source, cover it with a clear
plastic until it is well seasoned to limit the possibility of
insects emerging with the disease from that wood. Oak wilt does
not spread through the smoke or through burning the infected
wood.
• When using wood chips for mulch, use chips that have been composted
for at least one week. The chipping process itself usually destroys
the disease.
• If infection occurs, adjacent individual high value trees may
be injected with the Fungicide
Alamo (Injection Process.)
• Plant disease resistant tree species (DFW Tree List) now in Live
Oak and Red Oak dominated landscapes to diversify the urban forest.
These measures will not cure Oak Wilt, but will significantly reduce
tree losses.
