The Forestry Section
is involved in several natural resource projects including:
|
- Tandy Hills Master Plan
- Forestry staff have been advising on the development of a
Tandy Hills Master Plan. The park will eventually be
managed to protect some of the last remnant Fort Worth prairie.
- Rolling Hills Tree Farm
Prairie Restoration - Forestry has a 71 acre tree farm (Rolling
Hills Tree Farm) in south Fort Worth. Some of the tree
farm in not in productivity for growing trees. Instead,
staff has been working to restore native prairie through
establishing non-mow areas, conducting vegetation & wildlife
surveys, & eventually reseeding with native grasses &
wildflowers.
- Rolling Hills
Creek/Woodland Restoration - The tree farm has a small creek
running through it. Forestry plans to plant native
seedling trees & shrubs to restore the creek & grow it into a
more sustainable area for wildlife.

- Park Blitz - Forestry
has initiated a new program to survey the trees in Fort Worth
parks, determine future planting locations, & identify & remove
non-native invasive plants.
- Thicket Thinning -
Forestry has been working with
Citizen Foresters
to thin a stand of Cedar Elm seedlings from a thicket into a
healthy woodland stand.
- Tillery Park Privet
Eradication - Forestry has been working with a local
neighborhood association to remove the invasive, exotic shrub
Chinese Privet & seed the area with Buffalograss, which is a
native turfgrass.

- Free Native Trees -
Forestry has moved to offer only native trees through its
tree planting programs. Native
tree seeds are collected from locations throughout the city &
grown at our tree farm.

- Presentations on Native
Trees - Forestry staff provide public
presentations on the Cross Timbers ecosystem, native trees &
shrubs of the area, planting the right tree in the right place,
& many other topics.
- Rainwater Harvesting -
Forestry has set up a 10,000 gallon
rainwater harvesting system
at the Rolling Hills Tree Farm.
