volunteers

Forestry has many volunteer opportunities available through our programming. You and/or your group can choose to be a volunteer for a day through Volunteer Forester; be a volunteer for a semester through Vocational Forester; or be a volunteer for a lifetime through Citizen Forester.

cable programs

Forestry collaborates with the City Cable Office to produce several educational programs.  Cowtown Adventures is a fun, educational program that is geared towards elementary students, with an emphasis on science and how science applies to city departments and services.

A Walk in the Park is a program about what the City of Fort Worth Parks & Community Services Department has been up to lately.  Episodes feature Forestry's Neighborhood Tree Planting Program & the Rolling Hills Tree Farm & its rainwater harvesting system.  Find out why the City wants to provide FREE trees for your neighborhood & how you can get them!

tours

Your group can tour Rolling Hills Tree Farm & volunteer.  Tours are arranged as schedules allow, on a flexible basis.  The tours are provided for groups that agree to volunteer a minimum of 2 additional hours at the tree farm after the tour.  Tours include learning about nursery operations, heavy equipment, harvesting methods, greenhouse operations, rainwater harvesting, & natural resources restoration projects on site.  Volunteer work might include planting seedlings, potting trees, planting trees in the fields, watering, weeding, organizing, inventorying, & planting trees or removing invasive trees & shrubs in our creek restoration area.

Other tour possibilities include a forestry walk at a park.

To schedule a tour & volunteer date, call 817.871.5729.

presentations

Forestry staff is occasionally available to give public presentations to neighborhood groups, garden clubs, university classes, & various other groups - as schedules allow.  Topics might include: benefits of trees, how to identify tree hazards, tree species selection, Cross Timbers ecosystem, proper pruning techniques, native & non-native tree species of the area, trees' role in our municipal infrastructure, City of Fort Worth tree planting programs, services provided by the Forestry Section, rainwater harvesting, Look Up, Don't Lose a Limb!, volunteer opportunities, & many other topics.  Contact a Forester at 817.871.5738 to inquire about availability & scheduling.

Forestry staff also occasionally attend career days at local schools, & staff may be available to take students on a forestry walk through a local park near the school.
