The Forestry Section prunes city
trees that pose an unacceptable risk. Forestry may also prune
private trees that pose a risk to public property, such as a broken
branch over a city sidewalk. All Forestry work is inspected and prioritized in the
following manner.
Priority 1. Immediate danger to life or property. Example:
dead tree in poor condition, serious traffic hazard, broken limbs
hanging in the street, splitting or partially fallen trees.
Priority 2. Hindrance or
nuisance to traffic or right-of-way clearance, but not of
immediate danger. Example: dead trees that are still solid,
trimming of solid dead wood, low limbs, and minor traffic
hazards.
Priority 3. Routine
maintenance that does not present a high risk. Example: minor
trimming and low limbing, aesthetic pruning, trunk removal.
Forestry crews chip and remove debris from the job
site. Occasionally, wood suitable for cordwood is stacked by the
stump. The
adjoining property owner has first option to this wood but this
wood is available free for any citizen to use. Firewood left in
parks may be picked up also but vehicles may not be driven off
road. No cutting of trees for firewood is permitted
on any park property or on any parkway (city right of ways). |

Broken limbs on electric lines
should be referred to your electric provider. The City does
not provide line clearance.

|
 |
Trees are removed only when they are dead or a threat to the public.
If a private tree falls into the street only that portion of the
tree on public property will be removed. The remainder is the responsibility
of the property owner. Trees removed from public property will
leave a stump no higher than 3 inches
to allow for lawn mower clearance.

Damage to street trees is
caused when low and overhanging limbs are broken off by large
vehicles. Broken or low limbs can reduce visibility and obstruct
traffic, and cause damage to vehicles. It is important to
report these risks to Forestry staff for mitigation.

Trees, brush, shrubs or vines, which block the view of traffic
at street intersections, alley openings, driveways, traffic signs
of all types, and stoplights, will be trimmed.

If you have lost a city-owned street
tree (from the parkway), you may be eligible to pick up a free
5-gallon replacement tree at our tree farm. You must agree to
pick up & plant the tree in the pre-determined location.
Forestry will issue a voucher, which is redeemable on certain
specified dates. Call 817.871.5738 to inquire about a
replacement street tree.

A Forester can issue a permit to a properly owner to plant, trim,
or remove a tree in the parkway at their own expense. There is no
charge for the permit. While most permits are issued upon request,
the Forestry Section reserves the right to deny permission to remove
a mature, healthy tree.
If you need a tree removal permit for a construction site, please
contact the
Urban Forestry Compliance Section at 817.392.7933.

The Forestry Section consults with other city
