help us "green" Fort Worth

become a volunteer forester

The Volunteer Forester program works with groups or individuals to provide a unique volunteer & learning experience while at the same time doing something good for the environment in our community.  Periodically, the Forestry Section has projects where volunteers may lend an appreciated helping hand.

Trees create green spaces in our communities. They provide benefits beyond beauty such as increasing property value, moderating the effects of heat, sound, air pollution, excess water runoff and soil erosion.

The Forestry Section manages a Tree Farm where church, civic groups, corporate volunteers and students can come and work together on learning projects or community service work. Volunteers can participate in several projects such as nursery operations, organizing, repotting trees, planting trees in the fields, and pruning large-caliper trees. Other projects might include assisting with prairie restoration & creek/woodland restoration at the tree farm.

Forestry has a Neighborhood Tree Planting Program that provides trees for planting from October to March. Volunteer groups can help ensure that the trees are planted, and thus enjoyed for years to come.  Volunteer groups would assist local neighborhood residents in planting 5-gallon container trees in the parkways.  This would be a great community service project for Boy/Girl Scout troops, church groups, or sorority/fraternity groups.

The Forestry Section also conducts street tree and park tree surveys throughout the city.  Pick a park or tree-lined street near your house and conduct and inventory!  Volunteers can help identify trees, measure dbh, and record the condition of the tree.  This information will help Forestry staff identify hazardous trees, maintenance needs, and help maintain our urban forest.

In October, Forestry volunteers help plant trees for elderly and disabled residents through the Cowtown Brush-Up program.  If you would like to volunteer to plant a tree or several trees during this event, please contact Michelle and she can provide you with more details.

There are also several special event tree-planting projects as well as tree give-away opportunities.  Volunteers helped give away over 1,600 seedling trees at Mayfest 2008.
